Lakers Injury Report: Jarred Vanderbilt participates in practice
Jarred Vanderbilt has yet to suit up for the Lakers for the 2024-25 season, but it sounds like his rehab has begun to move in a positive direction.
On Monday, head coach JJ Redick said that the forward participated in the non-contact portion of practice.
“Vando was able to get on the court for some non-contact stuff, parts of practice today,” Redick said. “So, he’s trending in the right direction.”
This is the first positive update the team has had on Vanderbilt in quite some time. He suffered a setback in December while rehabbing and his target date was pushed back to early January.
Vando has been recovering from multiple foot surgeries during the summer and hasn’t played for the Lakers since suffering a mid-foot sprain in a February matchup against the Celtics.
Statistically speaking, Vanderbilt’s production does not stand out. Last season he averaged 5.2 points, 1.2 assists and 4.8 rebounds. However, his defensive versatility on the perimeter makes him an invaluable player on this Lakers roster.
His return would bring the Lakers closer to a fully healthy team and his addition would bring an elite defensive wing to the fold.
Regarding Gabe Vincent and Jaxson Hayes, Redick’s comments were short, sweet and generally positive after practice.
“Gabe did not practice today,” Redick said. “He’s questionable for tomorrow. It seems like it’s more of a day-to-day thing. Jaxson was a participant today in practice and is probable for tomorrow.”
Vincent exited Saturday’s game due to an oblique strain. Over the last six games, Vincent has played his best basketball in a Lakers uniform. He is averaging 5.8 points and is shooting a team-high 47.8% from three during this stretch. If he’s unable to go, it will shrink the Lakers’ guard depth significantly.
It was previously reported that Hayes was practicing with the contact this past weekend, so his return after missing 20 of the last 21 games due to his ankle sprain is imminent.
Redick also shared an update on Reddish, who will likely be available for the final Lakers game of 2024.
“Cam had a little back thing when he got hit in the face, it kind of tweaked his back,” Redick said after practice. “He’s planning to play as well.”
Overall, these positive updates suggest that the Lakers will have more of their guys available in the coming weeks.
