January 14, 2025

Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook is in his 17th NBA season. A nine-time NBA All-Star, Westbrook is still putting up big stat lines at this stage of his career.

After recording 21 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, Westbrook is now averaging 13.2 points, 6.8 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 38 games this season. Westbrook has started 17 games for Denver, averaging 15.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 8.2 assists in those contests.

In addition to his overall production, Westbrook has played well on the defensive end, tallying 62 steals this season, which ranks seventh in the NBA.

On Monday, the Nuggets made an announcement that illuminated just how well Westbrook is playing on the defensive end right now. According to the Nuggets, Dallas did not make a single field goal when defended by Westbrook on Sunday.

“On lock 🔒,” the team wrote in a post on X.

The NBA’s official matchup data for this contest can confirm Denver’s announcement. Per the league, Dallas shot 0/5 when defended by Westbrook on Sunday.

Opponents are shooting 44.6% from the field when defended by Westbrook this season and just 38.6% in the fourth quarter of games. Westbrook recently told reporters he wants the most difficult defensive assignments.

“I want to guard the best player every night,” Westbrook said after a win over the Brooklyn Nets. “I can guard 1-through-5. Every night.”

Denver’s announcement on Monday shows how much Westbrook is impacting the game defensively, which is sorely needed for a team that ranks 18th in defensive rating.
