Lakers insider says team is more open to keeping a key reserve guard
There are a few players on the Los Angeles Lakers who seem more likely to be traded than others should a satisfactory offer come up. Obviously, there is reserve guard D’Angelo Russell, but a few other players could be gone without much thought in such a scenario.
Gabe Vincent, another reserve guard, has been considered to be one of those players. He was injured for almost all of last season, and for the first six weeks or so of the season, he seemingly couldn’t throw a pea in the ocean.
But he has been starting to shoot well from the outside, and as a result, insider Jovan Buha of The Athletic said on a recent episode of “Buha’s Block” that the Lakers may not be so quick to jettison Vincent in order to upgrade their roster (h/t Sportskeeda).
“I think the Lakers are more open to the possibility of keeping Gabe,” Buha said.
Vincent, who played a key role in the Miami Heat’s Cinderella run to the NBA Finals in 2023, has shot 50% from 3-point range in his last 10 games. While it is somewhat unclear if he has permanently found enough of a consistent shooting touch or if he will regress to being cold soon, he has helped L.A. recover from a stretch in which it lost eight of 11 games.
In its Dec. 19 win on the road versus the Sacramento Kings, he went 4-of-5 from 3-point land and scored 12 points, which tied his high as a Laker. He had previously put up 12 points earlier this month in a loss to the Atlanta Hawks.
If Vincent continues to shoot an above-average percentage from downtown on a consistent basis, he could be a key 3-and-D guard off the bench for the Lakers throughout the rest of this season.
